I hereby open the doors on the naming contest for the new depreciating asset that I recently acquired. My old truck was sometimes called the Green Machine. Mom has named her red Honda Blanche (which means white).
So I thought I’d let the readers of this humble blog name this truck. (Everyone should try, but I’m pretty sure I already know that Brad will win.)
Part of me wants to be like Travis and Scott (when are you going to update yer blog, Scott?). Part of me wants a truck that will fit in the garage sensibly. Part of me wants to stop spending so much on gas (so we can spend it on our escalating cell phone bills). Part of me didn’t like the prospect of the old Chevy truck breaking down while we were out in the woods. (It needed a new a/c compressor. We weren’t sure it would make it as far as the Toyota dealership for trade in.) Part of me just wanted a cool new truck.
Someone else likes the new truck.
So start making naming suggestions. The winner will get some prize yet to be determined (but probably powdered sugar donuts).
I would name it Roosevelt. It would have a duel meaning: rugged naturalist Theodore and compassionate intellectual Franklin.
Prolachariot….because its red and it is a working vehicle!
Wowzer!!! congratulations. I love the Tacomas and I didn’t know they came with such a large second cab. Very nice!
I would name him Rodney.
I am a lurker on your family blog but had to get into this contest. I am entering the first thing that came to mind when I looked at your sweet truck–Butch. Sorry–had to go with the first thought.
Adam’s Official Submission(s):
Quadriga de Sol
For those of you that aren’t fluent in Latin like my father and I, this literally translates to “Chariot of the Sun” (consider using just the word Quadriga as a name, which is the chariot of the gods).
Phoebus
This is the Latin name for Apollo, the god of light. Classically paired with his chariot, poets use him as a metaphor for the sun.
Let me explain why I deserve to win. A chariot is one of the earliest forms of what we know now as the “car” and the color red can be used to symbolize fire, red, light, and the sun among other things. I have combined my father’s love for mythology, Latin, symbolism, intrigue and mystery into each of these names. Bring on the donuts.
dad loves mythology?

this is why i’m his favorite.
Dude, mine is way more clever than yours!
Red Truck = Red Soviet Union
Working Truck = Working Man = The Proletariat
Dad’s Vehicle = A Red Chariot
Put them all together….
THE PROLECHARIOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bender, Red Baron, Omega Red, Clifford, Buckbeak, Thoreau, Crimson Dynamo…
Stanley?
stanley from the office?
i like buckbeak, but the real tie is between Prolechariot, which kinda fits dad’s liberal views, and Quadriga de Sol, which fits his EXTREME love of mythology.
Where is Seth in this contest?
If he picks Prolechariot he might be viewed as a communist though.
rachel is right. i’ve changed my mind. i’d name it ensign wesley crusher.
p.s. i’m pretty sure aaron is a communist.
FIRST ensign wesley crusher!
Since the truck is red is it doomed to the fate of all the Red Shirts from the first incarnation of Star Trek?
No, Stanley from “Street Car Named Desire” Blanch.
Moulin Rouge, Big Red, Code Red, or just plain…AWESOME!
Alex suggested “Boba Fett”
Camionneur Rouge De Roche
Congrats on the new truck. Take a look at these clips from Top Gear and you can see just how tough Toyotas are –

As for the name, my first thought that I know won’t get picked – The Red State Rambler.
I was also thinking “The Come-here Rouge” but it seemed a bit inappropriate in light of the genocide and all.
My official suggested name – The Nipponatron. At the push of a button, it will change into either a gigantic flat screen TV showing Akira or a tiny Hello Kitty cell phone (with Akira ringtone). In keeping with Japanese culture, it will also feature a self-destruct button if the truck ever loses its honor.
For anyone that doesn’t know Akira is a famous anime in which the main hero rides a red bike…
for anyone that doesn’t know. aaron loves weird anime stuff.
I am not really a big fan of anime, Akira is just referenced in tv and movies constantly.
I think that “Bob Zoemick” would be a good name.
Or maybe “Todd”.
I have another one. “Monty”…as in Python.
By the way, what kind of mileage would you expect to get on that thing if you took a weekend trip to Dubuque?
